Explain why a stalk of celery put in salt water will begin to wilt.?
This is caused by something called osmosis. Normally, particles want to be evenly spread out--this is why dye spreads in still water.

When you put the celery in saltwater, you are putting cells with freshwater in a solution with salt in it. Salt does not travel through the plant's cell wall, but water does. Things tend towards an equilibrium, so the water will travel out of the cells until there is an equal concentration of salt in and out of the cells. But when the water leaves, the cells deflate. Hence, "wilting".

Reply:osmosis
Reply:because salt makes it dehydrated, sucking all the water out of the celery. its like if you were to but a bunch of salt in your mouth, it would make you really thirsty
Reply:the salt dehydrates the celery and makes it wilt. cuz wilting is a sign of lack of water
Reply:i think its because theirs so much pure liquid in the celery and then it starts to wilt because of the impurities
