How do you care for a banana tree once it turns brown but the stalk is still green do i cut off the old?

Don't panic. I started with just one, have given away eleven and still have seventeen and this is just 4 years down the road. They die off each year with the first freeze. Just leave them as awful as they look until spring. This will protect the new plant down inside. In the spring I cut the stump to about 2 ft. and a new tree comes out the center. I did cut them all the way to the ground when I didn't know better and they grew back then, also.

It's almost impossible to kill those suckers! :)

Cut it back to the green and it will be regrown in no time. And it will grow, and grow, and grow, and grow .........
Reply:My uncle cuts his down to the ground every year when they freeze. They ALWAYS come back as good as new.
Reply:The banana tree feeds off of the brown pieces you are talking about. If you cut them down before spring you may lose the tree. It uses the nutrients in the "dead" leaves and branches to conserve energy during the cooler months. I would wait until spring. My mom has three of them.
